The Design Trap
When you build or remodel, it is SO easy to fall into the trap of trying to make every element in a room a showstopper. You're picking out plumbing fixtures, and you want every single one to be stunning. You're selecting countertops and you think each one has to be spectacular.
But in reality, most people only notice about three to five things when entering a room.
The psychology of room perception
You may walk into a room and the first thing you notice is the stunning view out the window, which leads your eye up to a gorgeous chandelier. Then your view goes to the amazing stacked stone fireplace, and then down to a luxurious area rug.
You go into a powder room, and the striking wall sconces are the first thing you see, then you see your reflection in a beautiful mirror, then finally a breathtaking quartzite countertop.
Complementary vs. Focal Points
Don't get me wrong – everything in a room needs to be complementary, but not everything needs to be a focal point. So if your focal points in the powder bath are the lighting, mirror and countertop, you need a good faucet, cabinetry and wall finish to complete the look but you can spend less money on those items and budget your dollars toward your focal points.
Apply the Rule
So keep my rule of three to five in mind so you achieve the home of your dreams and not a budget buster. This principle applies to every room in your home:
- Living Room: Choose 3-5 elements like a statement fireplace, dramatic lighting, stunning view, luxurious rug, or custom built-ins
- Kitchen: Focus on countertops, backsplash, lighting, and maybe one standout appliance or feature
- Master Bath: Select your hero pieces – perhaps the freestanding tub, statement vanity, or dramatic shower tile
- Bedroom: Pick your focal points like the headboard, lighting, or a beautiful window treatment
By strategically choosing where to invest your design dollars, you'll create rooms that feel luxurious and intentional without breaking the bank on every single element.
